If you’ve trained for a long bike ride or marathon, there is a phase, a week to a few days beforehand, that is baffling. You back off. You’ve been training, pushing, sweating, maxing, thrashing and it turns to rest and recoup. Entire Saturdays have been lost to runs or rides and now are taking it easy. The race is almost here…
With the ride, race or run right around the corner, you reduce your mileage. “What? I have to keep at it. I can’t miss a day of training.” A reduction in training before the event just boggles the mind.
It’s called “tapering your training.” It’s an important step in the race preparation process. It’s a phase where you maintain fitness while promoting recovery. It may take your body up to 10 days to recover from a workout. When I’m preparing for a long bike ride I’ll reduce my weekly mileage by maybe 70%. Tapering keeps you from entering a ride or run with legs and heart that are exhausted leg.
There is a race approaching. It’s the coming school year. During the month of August, get some time away. Relax. Enjoy our beautiful weather. Go on vacation. Sit on the back deck with a cold ice tea. Taper, friend.
